Every rural region in Yangon have power access this year

By December, 2020, the ministry plan to enable all population living in rural Yangon regions to have electricity access, said Union Minister for Electricity and Energy U Win Khaing, at a ceremony to open the sub-power station in Kyauktan Township on January 6. 

In his opening speech, the minister said in a bid to enable the people to fully enjoy electricity, the ministry has stepped up its effort to distribute power  through the construction of power plants, power lines and sub-power stations. Thanks to it, the ministry electrified up to 50 per cent of the whole country from the national power grid, in December, 2019. The ministry has set a goal of electrifying 55 per cent in 2021, above 75 per cent in 2025-2026 and 100 per cent in 2030.

The ministry electrified 1085 villages in 2016 and 269 villages (64 per cent) in 2018-2019 FY. Plans are under way to electrify 495 villages or  up to 87 per cent in 2019-2020 FY, 259 villages in 2020-2021 FY and all villages in Yangon Region in 2020, he added. 

Since April, 2016, the current government has invested over Ks 2327 billion in the electricity sector and increased the power production to over 900 MW.
