Electricity will be provided in a rotation until June with industrial zones cut from power at night time, said Aung Kyaw Oo, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC) during a press conference held at Nay Pyi Taw on May 9.

“We are supplying 1,300 megawatts of electricity normally in Yangon Region and 1,400 megawatts of electricity in peak time. We will provide electricity with rotate system until June. The supply of electricity in towns is not the same. We have divided the town in four groups to supply electricity. We supplied 6 hours of electricity for each group and cut out 2 hours of electricity for them. We are planning to supply electricity in all residential areas at night time. We are not providing electricity to industrial zones at night time,” said Aung Kyaw Oo.

The YESC is using 25-megawatt diesel generators for ten hours a day to supply electricity required in the region, he said.

“We have a 25-megawatt diesel generator to provide electricity in Yangon. It consumes about 18,000 gallons of diesel. In Yangon Region, there are two 25-megawatt diesel generators: one in Thaketa and one in Thilawa,” he said.

Although the YESC is supplying electricity with great care to meet the demand, usage has been more than expected. It will be solved in monsoon season, said Tin Maung Oo, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

“We expected the demand for electricity will increase 300 or 400 megawatts more annually but the use of electricity is high and reached to 3,700 megawatts,” said the Permanent Secretary.

The use of electricity is increased in February and March as weather is very hot, he said.
