Container handling at Yangon and Thilawa ports increases fourfold

Container handling at Yangon and Thilawa ports, major foreign trade routes of Myanmar, has increased fourfold, and more cargo vessels are arriving to carry rice and sugar, according to Myanmar Trade Promotion Board under the Ministry of Commerce.

Ocean vessels have been moored at international ports in Yangon Region to carry over 50,000 tons of rice and over 15,000 tons of sugar from Myanmar. Moreover, more vessels are waiting to enter Yangon, according to ministry data.

Currently, over 10,000 tons of rice is ready for export at Sule Port (1), over 7,500 tons of sugar at Sule Port (3), over 9,000 tons of sugar at Sule Port, over 22,000 tons of rice at Sule Port (5), over 22,000 tons of rice at Sule Port (7) and 20,000 tons of containers at Thilawa Port (4). Most of the oceans vessels waiting to load and unload commodities are moored at Asia World Port, Industrial Port and Thilawa Port and are from Singapore, Thailand and Japan.

Within two weeks of 2018-2019 fiscal year, goods worth over US$470 million were exported increasing over twofold compared to the same period of last year. In these two weeks, US$230.799 million was earned from exporting industrial raw materials and US$77.565 from exporting agricultural products.

In those export products, the state-owned sector earned just over US$81 million and private sector US$391.538 million.
