Border trade at Muse 105th Mile Trade Zone, the hub of trade between Myanmar and China, remains normal, according to sources available on February 7.

Min Naing Soe, vice chair of Muse-Namkham Merchants Association, said cargo trucks from China were still arriving for import while export remained as normal as ever.

“These days, we see a lot of import trucks. There are about 440 a day up from about 250 in the past. I think this is because Chinese New Year nears. During the period, Myanmar merchants will not be able to buy products. Export is normal. On February 1, trade got a bit stagnant due to the situation where phone lines and internet connections stopped. Now the trade is normal,” Min Naing Soe said.

He added that online payment making was difficult due to the disconnection but there were no difficulties with services and customs duty payment.

Exchange rate in China-Myanmar trade increased after the declaration of a state of emergency in Myanmar on February 1.

“Exchange rate was not very high. At the border here, we usually see it up and down. If something happened, people would act in fear. But generally, it is normal as ever,” Min Naing Soe said.
