Authorities finish the installation of CCTV cameras in Sittwe

CCTV cameras have been installed at populated areas in Sittwe, Rakhine State and the office to monitor through the CCTV cameras was opened on December 15, sources said.

The installation began last month with the intention to provide safety and security of the public and to obtain information related to crimes, said an official.

“As far as I know, the installation of the CCTV cameras is for safety. The regional government has planned to install CCTV cameras in other towns in addition to Sittwe. It is to provide safety and security in the state,” said Rakhine State Development Affairs Minister.

However, the state government has yet to officially announce the news but it was confirmed by the police that there are plans to install CCTV cameras in Maungdaw, Mrauk-U, Thandwe and Kyaukphyu.

“The state government didn’t announce the installation of the CCTV cameras in Sittwe. They will install CCTV cameras in big towns in the state. It will announce after the installation work is finished,” said head of the state police force.

Locals said the installation of CCTV cameras in Sittwe is important as there are many traffic accidents, knife attacks, shootings, terrorist attacks in addition to robberies in the town frequently.

Nyi Pu, the state chief minister attended the opening ceremony.
