The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has placed Myanmar’s telecom operator, Mytel, on its sanctions list. The move, announced on January 6, 2025, includes 13 entities from Myanmar, China, and Pakistan.

The BIS revised its Export Administration Regulations (EAR) to incorporate the newly sanctioned entities, which include one from Myanmar, 11 from China, and one from Pakistan.

According to the U.S. government, these entities were designated for engaging in activities deemed contrary to national security and the foreign policy interests of the United States.

Mytel, officially registered as Telecom International Myanmar Company Limited, is the sole Myanmar company affected by the sanctions, which took effect on January 6, 2025.
