The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has forecast heavy rainfall across many parts of Myanmar from July 4 to 11, citing the strengthening southwest monsoon and the influence of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
According to observations taken at 6:30 am on July 3, the southwest monsoon has intensified to strong to very strong over the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. In addition, a low-pressure area over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and the adjoining coasts of northern Odisha and West Bengal in India is expected to trigger localized heavy rainfall across much of the country during the forecast period.
The DMH said heavy rain is likely in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Bago, Ayeyawady, and Tanintharyi regions, as well as Kayin, Chin, Mon, and Rakhine states. Rain and thundershowers are expected to be fairly widespread to widespread in many areas.
The department also warned of occasional strong winds and rough seas along Myanmar's coast and offshore waters. During thunderstorms, wind speeds may reach 30 to 35 mph, while wave heights are expected to range from 9 to 11 feet along the coast and in offshore areas.
The DMH further warned that the combination of the strengthened southwest monsoon and the low-pressure area could bring heavy rain, strong winds, flash floods, and landslides. Residents living in hilly and mountainous areas have been advised to remain alert for possible landslides, while those residing near small rivers and streams should take precautions against flooding and overflowing waterways. The department also urged domestic airlines, as well as operators of inshore and offshore fishing vessels and ships sailing along Myanmar's coastline and offshore waters, to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautionary measures during the period of adverse weather.
