Residents of Kalaw, a mountain town, reported that parts of the town are currently submerged due to the rising water levels of the Kalaw Creek.
Heavy rainfall began in the afternoon of September 10, causing the Kalaw Creek to rise, leading to flooding.
U Nanda Hla Myint, a member of the Union Solidarity and Development Party, wrote on his social media that although he had experienced flooding during his childhood, the current situation is the worst he has ever seen.
“Due to stormy weather, the Kalaw Creek overflowed, and parts of Kalaw town were flooded. My house was also submerged, with water rising about five feet above the ground, forcing families to evacuate and leave their homes behind. Most of the belongings in the house are likely to be damaged. I’ve experienced floods before, but this is the worst one in my life,” U Nanda Hla Myint wrote.
Additionally, it has been reported that areas such as Mawmyay-U Park, High School No. 1, the township hall, Wards 3 and 4, Kalaw Station, the road leading to Taunggyi and Inpyin have also been flooded due to the overflow of the Kalaw Creek, caused by water flowing down from the mountains.
In 1993, Kalaw experienced a similar flood due to the rising Kalaw Creek, but this is the first time such an event has reoccurred since then.
