MAWLAMYAING----- Khalon River Crossing Bridge on Yangon-Mawlamyaing railroad near Kyaiktha village in Kyaikhto Township, Mon State, was hit by a mine this morning, according to the locals.
One of the locals said that they heard a loud voice of a blast this morning. It shook our house. Later, they knew that a blast took place at the Khalon river crossing bridge on Yangon-Mawlamyaing railroad.
The authorities renovated the damaged frames and railroad after the blast. Although the Khalon river crossing bridge was hit by mine, the trains departing from Mawlamyaing to Yangon regularly operate, says the officials from Mawlamyaing railway station.
On the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway section, the train and railway tracks between Mawlamyine Township and Kyaikto Township are often mined. A freight train was hit by a mine on the Yangon-Mawlamyine railroad near Ywartanshae Village, Paung Township at around 7:00 pm on January 10 causing some of the train carriages derailed, and about 5 feet of the railroad was damaged.
Similarly, on the morning of January 2, it was reported that the freight train with 17 train carriages were hit by a mine at the railway mile post No. 141 in Golt Village, Thaton Township and three train carriages skidded to the left of the railway track and stopped about 4 furlongs away. Due to the explosion, about 6 feet of the train track was cut off and three crossties were destroyed, according to the Myanma Railways.
Moreover, on the night of December 13, 2022, it was reported that a freight train traveling from Thaton to Mandalay was detonated by a mine in Kalikyun and Tada-U villages in Thaton Township and some train carriages and railroad were damaged. In connection with this incident, Yangon-Mawlamyine upstream and downstream trains, which were run on December 14, have been canceled. On December 15, trains were able to resume as usual.
In addition, it has been reported that bridge No. 125, near milepost No. 162/8 of the Yangon-Mawlamyine railroad near Mukkyi Village, west of Maha Bodhi Poulthawmu Pagoda, Bantbwegone Village Tract, Paung Township, was detonated at about 8:00 pm on November 5, 2021.
A passenger train departing from Mawlamyine to Yangon was hit by a mine near Hninpale Village, Bilin Township, at around 11 pm on July 31 and two carriages derailed.
