Natural gas production has increased at Well No. 14 of the Maubin (South) oil and gas field in Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady Region after successful exploration and drilling of sand reservoirs, according to reports.

The Ministry of Electric Power and Energy is implementing both short- and long-term plans to strengthen national energy security, improve efficient energy management in the economy, and develop energy infrastructure. Efforts are also underway to reduce reliance on imported energy while expanding domestic resources. These initiatives include constructing a modern oil refinery, applying advanced technologies to boost oil and gas production, and cooperating with private sector partners to enhance output.

As part of ongoing efforts to increase onshore production, the state-owned Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) conducted research and drilling on thin sand layers at Well No. 14 in the Maubin Township. On April 28, the well has produced approximately 2 million cubic feet of natural gas.

The newly increased gas output is currently being transported via the Ywama gas distribution station in Yangon for electricity generation.

Since late 2023, the ministry has been exploring and extracting gas from similar sand layers in the Aphauk and Maubin fields. The produced natural gas is being distributed for use in compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles in Yangon, fertilizer factories, industrial zones in Yangon and Ayeyarwady regions, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plants, and the power generation sector.
