Myanmar’s President U Min Aung Hlaing attended a donation ceremony in Pathein on 8 August, where more than K23.324 billion was pledged by the military, regional governments, organizations and private donors to support relief and reconstruction efforts in flood-hit Laymyethna Township, Ayeyawady Region.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President said severe rainfall on 30 July caused a breach along the Ngawun River embankment, flooding five wards and 138 villages in Laymyethna Township. More than 9,000 households, comprising over 39,000 people, were affected, and 17 relief camps were opened.

He said authorities, local residents and volunteers have been working since 31 July to reinforce the damaged embankment using sandbags, geobags, bamboo barriers and heavy machinery. Additional measures, including sinking three sand-filled vessels to reduce the water flow and installing about 890 feet of 12-metre steel sheet piles, are also being implemented to strengthen the flood defences.

The President said the government is continuing emergency relief operations while preparing for long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction. He also expressed appreciation to donors and organisations for supporting both immediate assistance and recovery efforts.

During the ceremony, the President received donations on behalf of the relief programme and presented certificates of appreciation to contributors. Senior military officials and Union ministers later accepted additional donations, bringing the total contributions to more than K23.324 billion.
