More than 180,000 students went to school in Yangon Region on the first day of school opening for 2021-2022 academic year and the number increased to over 250,000 on the second day (June 2), State-run newspapers reported on June 3.

Basic education school across Myanmar opened on June 1. Yangon Region saw 172,399 students at primary, middle and high schools, 9,538 at monastic education schools and 1,733 at private schools totalling 183,670.

On June 2, the region saw 256,818 students going to school.

Basic education schools for the current 2021-2022 academic year opened June 1 seeing fewer students than ever, according to local school sources.

Some students enrolled at their respective schools. But, only some of them were found to be coming to school on the very first day of school opening.

Some parents reportedly received phone calls from schools asking their children to come to school in case they would not come after their enrollments.

“Schoolchildren are worried. We had to make some phone calls to them to come to school,” said the school head of a basic education high school.

Basic education schools across the country started enrolling on May 24. Till June 2, over 380,000 students made their enrollments in Yangon Region, the State-run newspapers reported.

In the previous academic years, Yangon Region normally had around 1.1 million students attending at government and private schools and monastic education schools.

The school enrollment week for 2021-2022 academic year was set from May 24 to 31. Students would not be charged for their school enrollments, the education ministry announced on April 30.
