The death toll from the explosion in Kaung Tat Village, Namkham Township of the northern Shan State, an area controlled by the TNLA, has risen to 38, including six children, while 70 people have been injured, according to information received as of around 1 p.m. on June 1.
The explosion occurred at around noon on May 31 in Kaung Tat Village, causing extensive damage to homes and injuring numerous residents. The number of fatalities increased following ongoing search and rescue operations.
“According to information from charity and rescue organizations this afternoon, 37 people died yesterday (May 31), and one more person died today, bringing the total to 38. Some reports suggest the death toll exceeds 40, but rescue groups that conducted their own verification said the confirmed number is 38. Six of the deceased are children. There are 70 injured people, and all of them are currently being treated at Namkham Hospital,” a resident of northern Shan State said at around 1 p.m. on June 1.
In a statement regarding the incident, the TNLA said that at around noon on May 31, explosives stored for use in mining and stone extraction operations in Kaung Tat Village, Namkham Township, accidentally detonated.
According to the statement, the explosion resulted in numerous deaths and injuries among local residents, as well as significant destruction of homes. The TNLA expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, injuries, and property damage caused by the incident and extended its condolences and sympathy to the affected families.
The TNLA further stated that the explosives involved in the blast had been stored by the PSLF/TNLA Economic Department for use in mining and quarrying activities. It said a detailed investigation is underway to determine the cause of the explosion and that those found responsible will face legal action in accordance with the law.
The group also said that emergency relief, medical assistance, and rehabilitation efforts for those affected by the explosion are being carried out as quickly as possible in cooperation with relevant departments.
