US expert shares insight into Sustainable Development Goals

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - Lao leaders and specialists in the field recently gathered in Vientiane to learn more about the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals as they work towards set targets.

A national forum on the Sustainable Development Goals was held in Vientiane on January 6, headed by the Director of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, SDG Advocate, University Professor and Director of the Centre for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, New York, USA, Professor Jeffrey Sachs.

He was invited by the government to discuss the 2030 Agenda at the national forum on the SDGs, which was attended by more than 100 Lao leaders and other government officials.

Today he will give a lecture on the SDGs to about 200 teachers and students at the National University of Laos.

During his visit, Professor Sachs also met Deputy Prime Minister Somdy Duangdy. 

Mr Somdy said the recommendations provided by Prof. Sachs would make a significant contribution to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals.

This year the national committee responsible for achieving the SDGs in Laos approved the National SDG Roadmap and SDG Communication Work Plan which is fundamental in working towards the Sustainable Development Goals between now and 2030.
