Myanmar establishes leading group for Myitsone project coordination with China

The State Administration Council (SAC) has announced the notification No. (74/2024) to form the Upstream Ayeyawady Confluence Basin Hydroelectric Project Steering Group to assist in coordination between the Myanmar and Chinese governments for the Upstream Ayeyawady Confluence Basin Hydroelectric Project.

Regarding Upstream Ayeyawady Confluence Basin Hydroelectric Project, the Upstream Ayeyawady Confluence Basin Hydroelectric Project Steering Group has been formed to manage technical solutions and public relations activities.

The Deputy Minister Electric Power will be the leader of the Upstream Ayeyawady Confluence Basin Hydroelectric Project Steering Group, and the Minister for Natural Resources of the Kachin State Government will be the second leader of the group.

The members are Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Information, Director General of Ministry of Electric Power, Director General of Electric Power Planning Department, Director General of Hydropower Implementation Department, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Planning and Finance, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation and the Secretary of the Kachin State Government.

The tasks of the Upstream Ayeyawady Confluence Basin Hydroelectric Project Steering Group, in collaboration with the leadership of SPIC Yunnan International Power Investment Co., Ltd (SPICYN), are research activities, technical solutions and public relations activities for the Upstream Ayeyawady Confluence Basin Hydroelectric Project and provide guidance and decision-making to the Technical Working Group and Public Relations Working Group on key issues of the Upstream Ayeyawady Confluence Basin Hydroelectric Project.

In addition, they will have to submit the operational conditions to the Union Minister for Electric Power, to carry out the formation of technical work groups and public relations work groups and assist in coordinating projects between the government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the People's Republic of China.

The notification was issued by the State Administration Council on April 24, 2024 with the notification No. (74/2024), and it was stated in the Myanmar Gazette on May 17, 2024.
