Bago town experienced a record flood in 60 years, and the water level started to decrease on October 11.
“This is a record in 60 years. Now, many roads have reappeared but water still remains in low-lying areas. Water receded on Mawgan 1st Street, 2nd Street, 20th Street and Magnetic Street," said Ko Min Min Tun from a Bago-based Gyi Lay Gyi social assistance association.
Ko Min Min Tun continued that two people died due to flood in Bago town and other losses are yet to be heard.
"We got the news that one person died on the Mawgan ward. I don't know if it's 23rd street or 25th street. In addition, I heard that Ma Shwe Lae found a body. At the moment, only those two have been reported," Ko Min Min Tun said.
The two victims are an elderly man and an elderly woman, but the details are yet to be known, according to another social assistance association.
Ko Min Min Tun continued that preparations are being made for diarrhea, which may occur as a result of the flood.
"Mainly, we are planning to help with oral rehydration sales sachets. Today, our team has already helped 2,000 drinking water bottle packs and 4,000 oral rehydration sales sachets. Rice, cooking oil and salt are also needed," Ko Min Min Tun said.
On the night of October 11, it rained heavily and the wind blew in Bago. Due to this, the weather conditions are also being monitored, according to Bago residents.
"It's not just raining at night but the wind blew hard. The rain lasted for almost an hour. But in the morning, the water didn't rise, so it was fine. Now we are in a situation where we are also monitoring the weather," Ko Min Min Tun said.
The rain that fell on October 8 set a new record for Bago town in 59 years. The new record rainfall was 7.87 inches, beating the previous record of 5.75 inches set in 2018.
After the record rainfall, not only the townships in Bago Region, but also in Bago town were flooded from the night of October 8.
It is also reported that this flood in Bago Township is the fourth flood this year.
Due to heavy rains and the rise of the Bago River, Bago town and the surrounding villages were affected by the floods, and it is estimated that more than 4,500 households and tens of thousands of people were affected by the floods.
