Tourist arrivals increase in first half of 2018-19 FY

The number of tourist arrivals in the first six months of 2018-2019 fiscal year has reached 2.165 million. The spending by the tourists amounted to 1,104 million US dollars. The tourist arrivals and spending have increased compared with the same period last year, according to the bi-annual report on the national planning for 2018-19 FY submitted by the Joint Public Account Committee. 

The number of tourist arrivals in the first six months of 2016-17 FY reached 1.779 million and the spending by tourists amounted to 1,344 million US dollars. In the same period of 2017-18 FY, the number of tourist arrivals reached 1.849 million and the spending by tourists, 1,047 million US dollars, according to the report. 

Till June this year, the number of tourist arrivals reached over 2.14 million, a 24-per-cent increase compared with the same period last year. The number of Chinese tourist arrivals increased by 140 per cent, according to the figures from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population. 

The number of tourists who entered the country by flight increased by 29 per cent, those via border gates, 174 per cent while those who entered by the cruise ships declined by 13 per cent. 

Due to political situations, the number of tourists from the EU and North American countries has dropped. But the country receives more tourists from China, South Korea, Japan and other Asian countries, according to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population.
