There are 13 million people nationwide covered by the Military Service Law according to the 2019 inter-censal survey, and not all of them will have to serve in the military, said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, head of the information team of the State Administration Council while informing the public about the Military Service Law.

"At this point, we want to inform the public again that according to our country's 2019 inter-censal survey, the population that will be covered by the Conscription Law, which can be covered, the population that can be covered is 13 million. So, will all 13 million be made to serve in the military at the same time? It is not. We have the responsibility of national defense to serve in this military service. It is already included in the Military Service Law of those who can serve," Major General Zaw Min Tun said.

The enactment of the Conscription Law is not a domestic and foreign danger, but because it is the responsibility to observe these three main national causes, and it was enacted in order to receive military education and to serve the national defense, he said.

"We have 6.3 million men and 7.7 million women and do not count women. If we count only men, one percent of these 6.3 million is 63,000 and two percent is 120,000. Ten percent is 600,000. Do we need that much population? Do we need 10 percent? There is no need. There are 60,000 wards and villages in Myanmar. If you count the wards, there are more than 60,000 wards and villages. There is no need for more than one or two people to serve in the military or defense in a ward," he said.

The promulgation of that law is not for the government of SAC, but for the future democratic system. It was enacted with the intention of implementing multi-party democracy until the time of the governments, he continued.

"According to the geopolitical situation of our country and the current situation in the world, it is mandatory to enforce this law. For the defense of this country, it is necessary to increase the knowledge about defense among all citizens," he said.

Internationally, there are various laws and regulations regarding the military law or the national service system. There are only two countries that have not enacted this law in five neighboring countries. The remaining three countries have already enacted this law. In these three countries, one country that does not implement the law, a country that is fully operational and a country that is partially operational, he added.

He added that according to the 2019 inter-censal survey, there are 13 million people nationwide covered by the militia service law, but Article 22 of the law provides for exemption and Article 15 for temporary deferment.

"Article 22 provides for people who are exempted. For example, religious people and married women are included. Also, there will be people who are exempted by order from a special board. In addition, the parents and the public often ask if students will have to serve in the military when they reach their age, and whether employees will also have to serve, etc. According to Article 15, there are people who have the right to temporary postponement under Article 15. These are government staff, students who have not completed their education, and people who take care of the elderly. However, civil servants and students after completing their education, will have to carry out the responsibility of national defense in proportion to. Regarding this, the necessary rules, orders, and announcements will come out from the Ministry of Defence," he clarified.

The Military Service Law, which was enacted in 2010, will come into force on February 10, 2024, announced the SAC.

In the law on public service, the age for military service is between 18 and 35 years for men, 18 to 27 years of age for women, 18 to 45 years of age for male experts and 18 to 35 years for female experts.

In addition, the Reserve Forces Law enacted in 2010 will come into force on February 13, 2024, announced the SAC.
