Union Parliament has decided to donate K22.5 million of its MPs including their daily allowances to the flood victims in Mon and Kayin states and Taninthayi region.

Lower House MP Dr Hla Moe submitted a proposal of sympathy during a session of Union Parliament held in Nay Pyi Taw on August 13, calling for cash donations to the flood victims in Mon and Kayin states following natural disasters such as heavy rain, flash floods and landslides that happened in August.

The Union Parliament speaker announced the approval of the proposal after taking parliamentary decision and debate.

Taninthayi Region was also listed after an MP from the region proposed to include the region as it is also suffering such natural disasters.

"We will include Mon and Kyain states and Taninthayi region in the proposal. For the flood victims from those regions, Lower House MPs will donate K6,360,000, Lower House speaker K8,640,000, Upper House MPs K4,480,000 and Upper House speaker K3,020,000 totalling K22.5 million," said Union Parliament speaker T Khun Myat.

MP Dr Hla Moe said various countries including Myanmar were suffering from consequences of global climate change. He blamed more disaster outbreaks in Myanmar for weaknesses in environmental conservation and indiscriminate use of natural resources for self-interest commercial purposes.
