Kayin People’s Party (KPP) has issued a statement vowing to cooperate with the National League for Democracy government in establishing a democratic federal union for the sake of national peace.

KPP said the statement issued on November 28 was also a reply to the NLD’s open letter they received. The letter was titled “the union affairs to be envisioned for the future Myanmar.

“We ethnic minorities want to excise federalism. As they talk about federal democracy, we don’t need to refuse at all. This is the path we want to go to,” KPP chairman Saw Tun Aung Myint.

The NLD sent a letter to 48 ethnic parties on November 12. The letter carries three paragraphs under the title of the union affairs to be envisioned for the future Myanmar. The NLD says in the letter that it will pay attention to the ethnic minorities in the future hoping they will actively participate in the effort to build a democratic federal union.

In its reply statement, KPP expressed its delight at receiving the NLD letter as it will contribute a lot to national unity.

“I think they will have to try to achieve peace without fail. The new government must adopt a policy if they want to build peace. Then must lay down a policy. So I think it is their policy. If it is so, our country will have a brighter future,” Saw Tun Aung Myint said.

KPP fielded over 70 candidates to run for the 2020 election in some regions and states including Ayeyawady Region and Kayin State. The party won a seat.

After the NLD’s open letter to the ethnic parties, some made their replies while some did not.
