Bridge on Yangon-Mawlamyine rail section mined: locals report blast and damage

A bridge on the Yangon-Mawlamyine rail section, situated between Kalikyun and Kyunechaung villages in Thatone Township, Mon State, was targeted by a mine during the night of May 20.

According to local witnesses, a loud blast echoed through the area around 9:30 PM on that fateful evening.

The aftermath revealed significant damage to two locations along the railway section. An official from Mawlamyine Railway Station confirmed the impact of the mine blast.

As a result, train schedules for Yangon have already been postponed. However, there is hope that once the damaged portion of the Yangon-Mawlamyine railway section is repaired, regular train services can resume.

This incident is not isolated. On April 10, a cargo train carrying gravel fell victim to a mine attack between Donwin and Theinseik railway stations in Thaton Township, Mon State.

Unfortunately, such occurrences are not uncommon on the Yangon-Mawlamyine Railway, where sections in Paung Township, Thaton Township, Bilin Township, and Kyaikto Township are frequently destroyed by mines.
