Civilian casualties in Kachin State as heavy weapons strike in Khat Cho village

In a tragic incident near Waingmaw Township, Kachin State, heavy weapons struck Khat Cho village, resulting in the deaths of six villagers and injuries to 11 others, accoridng to the local social rganizations.

The incident occurred on May 20 when a heavy weapon shell exploded in a new ward of the village. Among the victims were four internally displaced persons who had fled fighting in 2011, along with other residents. 

Five individuals sustained serious injuries from shrapnel and were taken to Myitkyina Hospital for medical treatment, while six others received care at the Waingmaw hospital. 

The source of the attack remains unknown, leaving the community fearful and prompting some locals to flee to Waingmaw and Myitkyina townships, says a man from the Khat Cho village. 

Additionally, reports indicate that jetties along the Ayeyawady River have been closed due to the ongoing conflict.
