Yangon Industrial Zones grapple with two-hour daily power supply
Published 21 May 2024

In Yangon Region’s industrial zones, residents contend with a mere two hours of electricity each day.

The Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC) has confirmed this limited supply, which runs from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Previously, industrial areas received four hours of electricity daily, but as of May 20, the allocation has been halved.

The YESC attributes this reduction to rising electricity consumption in residential neighborhoods. Unfortunately, businesses in the industrial zones now face operational challenges due to insufficient power. Many factories rely on diesel generators during the remaining hours, leading to increased fuel costs.

Despite the previous four-hour window, power outages persisted. Residents express frustration at the inconvenience caused by the restricted schedule.

The uncertainty surrounding any extension exacerbates the situation for those dependent on reliable electricity for their livelihoods.
