Heavy Rain Possible in Yangon, Ayeyarwady, Tanintharyi and Mon States Due to Strong Monsoon Winds

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has announced that scattered heavy rainfall is possible in Yangon Region, upper Sagaing Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region and Mon State due to moderate to strong monsoon winds over the southern and east-central parts of the Bay of Bengal.

According to the department, moderate to strong monsoon winds are currently prevailing over the Andaman Sea and the southern and east-central Bay of Bengal, while the remaining parts of the Bay of Bengal are experiencing partly to moderately cloudy conditions. As a result, until the morning of May 26, widespread thundershowers are expected in Yangon Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kayin State and Mon State; fairly widespread rain is expected in Bago Region, upper Sagaing Region, Kachin State and Shan State; while scattered rain is forecast in the remaining regions and states. Isolated heavy rain is likely in Yangon Region, upper Sagaing Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region and Mon State, with a 100 percent likelihood of rainfall.

Regarding cloud developments, rain clouds are currently forming over Yangon Region, Bago Region, Ayeyarwady Region, Tanintharyi Region, Kayin State and Mon State. Along the paths of these cloud systems, weather phenomena such as strong winds, thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms and heavy rain may occur. Rainfall is also expected to increase over the next two days in Tanintharyi Region, Kayin State and Mon State.

During the past 24 hours, scattered thundershowers occurred in Mandalay Region, Magway Region, lower Sagaing Region, Kachin State, Kayah State, Chin State and Rakhine State. Fairly widespread rain was recorded in Naypyidaw, upper Sagaing Region and northern Shan State, while widespread rain fell across the remaining regions and states. Isolated heavy rain was reported in Magway Region, upper Sagaing Region, Ayeyarwady Region and Kachin State.

Daytime temperatures were about 2 degrees Celsius above the May average in Tanintharyi Region and Chin State, while Naypyidaw and Rakhine State recorded temperatures about 2 degrees Celsius below the May average. Temperatures in the remaining regions and states were close to the seasonal average for May.

Significant maximum temperatures recorded on May 24 included 41.4 degrees Celsius in Chauk, 40 degrees Celsius in Ye-U, 39.2 degrees Celsius in Nyaung-U, 39 degrees Celsius each in Pakokku and Myinmu, 38.1 degrees Celsius in Hsinhpyukyun, 37.6 degrees Celsius at Tada-U Airport Meteorological Station, 37.4 degrees Celsius in Gangaw, 36.8 degrees Celsius in Myingyan, 36.7 degrees Celsius in Monywa and 36.6 degrees Celsius in Kalay.
