Former Mon State Chief Minister sentenced to 21 years in prison on anti-corruption charges

A statement said former Mon State Chief Minister Dr Aye Zan has been sentenced to 21 years in prison on nine charges under the Anti-Corruption Law.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has set up a commission of inquiry to investigate allegations that Dr Aye Zan took money from businessmen for his position and authority.

According to the investigation, it was found that former Mon State Chief Minister Dr Aye Zan had violated existing laws and regulations when he was in office by receiving over 569 million kyats from entrepreneurs for pumping sand in the Salween River since 2018, losing more than 132 million kyats when he allowed to reduce the mineral tax to be actually paid to the state budget in the sand mining project in the 2019-2020 FY, giving 20 million kyats from COVID-19 funds to another person and giving 65 million kyats to two other people and he was charged under Section 55 of the Anti-Corruption Law on April 27, 2021, according to the statement.

The Mon State High Court sentenced former Chief Minister Dr Aye Zan to 21 years in prison under Section 55 of the Anti-Corruption Law on May 16.
