A fatal crash occurred early on February 5, when a speeding vehicle crashed under an overpass near Nyaungpinzin village on the Monywa-Mandalay highway. The incident took place around 7:00 am, resulting in the death of a female passenger.
According to the Sagaing District Fire Department, the Honda Fit passenger vehicle, traveling from Mandalay to Monywa, attempted to overtake another vehicle in the narrow right lane. Unable to control its speed, the car struck three overpass pillars before crashing beneath the overpass.
Emergency responders were quick to arrive at the scene. A rescue team, including a search and rescue vehicle, eight personnel from the Sagaing District Fire Department, ten firefighters from the township fire station, seven members of the Obo Social Assistance Association, and traffic police, worked together to assist the victims.
The driver of the vehicle was found unconscious and in critical condition. Meanwhile, a 54-year-old female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, having suffered head injuries, bruised ribs, and a fractured nose. The Obo Social Assistance Association transported her body to the 200-bed Sagaing Hospital.
The fire department has confirmed that an investigation into the accident is ongoing.
