Following criticism, authorities made inspection visits to flats in the compound of Mudita Housing in Mayangon Township, Yangon Region, where foreigners are living, and seized narcotic drugs.
Mudita Housing (1) Building A has 33 flats in which foreigners are living. Of them, 10 flats where Nigerians are living were searched by authorities concerned on the morning of June 4.
Many of those flats were found locked and the Nigerians might have fled after receiving information about the search. Only three flats could be searched. In one of them, a Nigerian man and a Myanmar woman were arrested after being caught dealing with and abusing narcotics.
The search came after housing officials tipped off the anti-drug drug squad about suspicious drug dealers.
“At about 6 am, authorities conducted searches. Before the inspection, the list of all the flats inhabited by foreigners was given to the ward administrator. The search focused on the flats with Nigerians. There are 33 flats where Koreans and Nigerians live. When we made the search, most of the flats were locked as they might have received information. We were able to check three flats. When we checked Room No.715, we caught them both selling and abusing narcotic drugs. When we made arrests, a little brawl occurred but no one was hurt. We got information that Nigerians were buying and selling drugs during the Covid-19 period,” said Ohn Mar Kyi, chairperson of Mudita Housing A development committee.
