Farmers are cutting back on fertilizer use due to high prices and limited availability, according to the WFP.

The agency warned that a 50 percent reduction in fertilizer use in rice cultivation could lower yields by 10 to 15 percent.

“This could drive up rice prices and raise serious concerns about the country’s food security. This crisis is not only affecting the agricultural sector, but the entire population,” the WFP said.

It added that agriculture is the backbone of Myanmar’s food system, and difficulties faced by farmers will have nationwide consequences.
