About 40 students attending Dawei Education College suffered  from food poisoning on October 17 and had to be taken to the hospital. Among them, 11 students are treated as in-patients.

On October 16 evening, students living at the hostel were fed with canned sardines and potatoes. The next morning, students that ate the sardines and potato meal suffered nausea and vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and they were sent to Dawei General Hospital. They were treated at the Emergency Unit.

“At 4:30 pm, the students were given a meal containing canned sardines and potatoes.   They were sent to hospital on October 17 morning. According to the wardens of the hostel, the students suffered from nausea and diarrhea and they were sent to hospital quickly with a taxi. We’ve already checked the canned sardines but they were well within their expiration dates. Medical officers from the hospital said there is nothing to be worried,” said Ni Ni Than, principal of the Dawei Education College.

She continued in saying that in her opinion, those suffered food poisoning may eat food bought from street food vendors which means that even the weather condition could make the food worse. The students were attending the second semester of pre-primary teacher ship training No-5/2018 on October 3.  There are 200 students attending the training and among them, more than 30 suffered food poisoning.

“10 males and 1 female student are currently being hospitalized in Dawei Hospital. Their condition is stable and their blood is being tested for us to learn information on the state of their kidneys. They will still need to be monitored,” according to Dr.Aye Min Thu.

During this year, there are frequent cases of food poisoning occurred in Dawei.

Major causes of food poisoning are caused by virus, bacteria, and parasites.

When  one suffers from food poisoning, it’s best to gradually hold off on solid foods until vomiting and diarrhea have passed and instead ease back to your regular diet by eating simple-to-digest foods that are bland and low in fat, such as: rice, banana, chicken broth, and diluted fruit juices.
