Clashes continued in Lay Kay Kaw area on December 30th

Although some IDPs fled to Thailand and those fled to Myawaddy returned to their homes, clashed continued in Lay Kay Kaw area on the morning of December 30 according to locals.

More than 10,000 people fled their homes as clashes began in Lay Kay Kaw, south of Myawaddy, since December 15.

Over 6,000 people fled to Thailand and among them, 500 IDPs returned to their homes on December 29.

As military took control in Lay Kay Kaw, Yathe Gu, Pahika Law, Htimay Wah Khi, Ingyin Myaing, Min Latt Pan, Phalu villages, they urged villagers to return homes.

About 100 IDPs from Myitta Lin Myaing village, taking refuge at the Kyan Taing Aung monastery in Myawaddy Yaypu ward, returned to their village on December 29 according to sources.

“We heard the sound of gunfire and heavy weapons in Lay Kay Kaw area at 8:00 am this morning. There were exchanges of fire yesterday at 3:45 pm,” said a local.

On the morning of December 31, clashes between KNLA and military took place near Myohaung village, Kawkayeik as military increases their operation in the area. As a result, locals living in southern part of Kawkayeik had to flee from their homes.
