Traffic was severely jammed on the second day of trial run for traffic lights at three roundabouts in Yangon on November 5, leading to traffic police helping to ease the traffic jam after switching off the traffic lights, sources said.

The installation of traffic lights at Hanthawaddy roundabout was made on November 4 and cars were jammed at the traffic lights.

Yangon region transport authority (YRTA) announced on November 1 that they will make a trial test for traffic lights system in Hanthawaddy, U Htaung Bo and U Wisara roundabouts from November 4 to 7.

“The traffic isn’t jammed all the time. It only mostly happens during rush hours. There are many cars going along Kabaraye Pagoda road in the morning. From our experience, if a traffic policeman can regulate the traffic in the morning and afternoon, it will be ok. They don’t need to install traffic lights at the roundabouts. The traffic policemen already know which way to clear. The traffic lights will show systematically,” said an experienced taxi driver.

The YRTA alerted the drivers to be careful at the traffic lights in three roundabouts in the time of trial test.

An on-duty traffic policeman said the traffic in roundabouts is eased all the time except in rush hours. They had to switch off traffic lights and helped to ease the traffic jam.
