Authorities release 670 prisoners from prisons, detention centers and labour camps in Mon State

As a commemoration of the 76th Anniversary of Independence Day, a total of 670 prisoners including 31 charged under Section 505 (a) were released from prisons, detention centers and labour camps in Mon State on January 4, according to sources close to prison.

There were 65 males and 38 female prisoners from Kyaikmaraw prison, 231 males and 119 females from Mawlamyine prison, 93 male prisoners from Thaton prison, 35 female prisoners from Motpalin (female) labour camp, 41 male from Ingabo and Taungson labour camps, 17 prisoners from Zinkyaik labour camp, 20 from Yinnyein labour camp and 11 from Inbyaung labour camp.

A total of 11 men and 12 women sentenced under Section 505 (a) were among those released from Kyaikmaraw prison, while 8 men sentenced under Section 505 (a) were released from Thaton prison, according to sources close to correctional department.

“Those released from Kyaikmaraw prison under Section 505 (a), majority is from Thanbyuzayet Township. From Thaton prison, people from Paung Township charged under Section 505 (a) were also released,” said the man who didn’t want to be identified.

No prisoner charged under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law was released, he continued.

In commemoration of the 76th Anniversary of Independence Day on January 4, 2024, a total of 9,652 prisoners were granted pardon in accordance with section 401, sub-section (a) of the code of criminal procedure, after they pledged that if they were convicted again, they would agree to be punished with the remainder of the sentence in addition to the new sentence by Order Nos. 1/2024 issued on January 4.
