Licences of employment agencies will be revoked if they overcharge Myanmar migrant workers for the service of sending them to Thailand by violating the provisions of the bilateral agreement, said Win Shein, director general of the Labour Department under the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population.

"The service fee is K150,000 in Myanmar and 5,000 baht in Thailand. Complaints can be sent if there is any agency in Thailand that overcharges workers. When we asked them, they said no complaint was reported on the Thai side. We can't do anything. So we invite complaints. Licences will be terminated for overcharging," said the director general.

Employment agencies have demanded to increase the service fee to K250,000 and 10,000 baht because K250,000 was set when one baht was equivalent to K30.

However, the demand has seen protests from organizations working for the rights of Myanmar migrant workers.

Under the new law enacted by Thailand, service fee must be paid by the Thai employer.

It is prescribed in the agreement between Myanmar and Thailand that the service fee for sending a Myanmar worker is K150,000 and about 3,000 baht for visa, medical checkup and work permit. However, a Myanmar worker reportedly has to pay from K600,000 to K1 million for the service fee.
