The Democratic Party of National Politics (DNP) will have about 120 parliamentary candidates run for the 2020 general election, party chairman Soe Maung said.

Soe Maung served as advocate general under the military government and minister at the President Office under President Thein Sein’s government.

He himself will compete in the Lower House constituency of Yesagyo Township, Magway Region.

“It (Yesagyo Township) is my native place,” said the DNP chairman.

In the 2010 election, Soe Maung competed in the same constituency representing the Union Solidarity and Development Party, won a parliamentary seat and became minister at the President Office.

He was however defeated by the rival candidate from the National League for Democracy in the 2015 general election.

Retired Major General Lun Maung, who served as auditor general under the Thein Sein government, also serves as vice chair (1) of DNP. Most of the party top leaders are retired senior military officers such as lieutenant generals and major generals. However, vice chair (2) Soe Win, who is a former Lower House MP, is a civilian.

The two vice chairmen will not contest the coming election. But, retired Colonel Than Aung is due to compete in Kayah State.

“What is different from other parties is our party candidates are spending money out of their own pocket. Our part doesn’t need to be supported. We don’t support either,” Soe Maung said.

DNP was founded in early 2019 with the slogan of practising national politics based on the entire national people.
