A low pressure area may form over the Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal on May 30 and it may intensify into a depression on May 2, announced the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH).

The rumours about a storm may enter into Myanmar on April 29 are not true and people need not to believe easily on the news spread around in social media, said Dr Kyaw Moe Oo, Director General of the DMH.

The news spread around in social media is based on the output models directly and although the output models are very useful in forecasting in some other fields, it may lead to vague weather forecasting as weather makes changes every day. It will be dangerous if people are dependent on an output model only, he said.

The DMH announced on April 23 that a low pressure area may form between April 28 and 30. They are using model outputs released by the World Meteorological Organization, famous meteorological centers and the DMH to forecast using satellite images, radar images and present weather conditions, he added.

“Air pressure in coastal areas is very important to make a forecast about the day the storm will enter the shore. The DMH knew about the likelihood of a storm as a result of model outputs but it didn’t announce it as it is still uncertain. The DMH will announce if the forecast is accurate,” he said.

Storms usually occurred in Bay of Bengal in April, May, October and November and monsoon depressions formed in North Bay of Bengal in monsoon season. Storms occurred in pre and post rain seasons are very destructive and may cause damages.

A low pressure area may form over the South Bay of Bengal and it may further intensify into a depression. Weather will be partly cloudy to cloudy over in the Andaman Sea and South Bay and partly cloudy elsewhere over the Bay of Bengal.

Southwest monsoon is likely to set in Southern Myanmar Areas during (16-21) of May, Deltaic Areas during (22-27) of May and Central Myanmar Areas during (28 May – 2 June). Two Low Pressure Areas may form over the Bay of Bengal and one may further intensify into the Depression.  During this monsoon period, monsoon will be moderate. Weather will be partly cloudy to cloudy in the Andaman Sea and South Bay and partly cloudy elsewhere in the Bay of Bengal.
