(Yomiuri Shimbun/ANN) — Ehime Prefecture in Japan received a cardboard box containing a large amount of 10,000 yen bills in late January, the prefectural government announced Thursday.
According to the local government, the cardboard box was sent to the governor on Jan. 29. The bills will total about 100 million yen ($907,000) if they are all real, the government said.
The name and address of the sender are fictitious, and no theft or loss has been reported, according to the government.
“We appreciate the money as a donation and will use it for the reconstruction of areas affected by the heavy rain in western Japan,” Gov. Tokihiro Nakamura said.
According to the prefecture, several hundred of the 10,000 yen bills are stuck together in bundles, and the surfaces of some are so dirty that it is difficult to determine whether they are real. The money was delivered via a parcel delivery service, together with a letter saying, “Please use the money for something good, and leave me in peace.”
Since the bills do not have a printed hologram to prevent forgery, they were apparently issued no later than 2004, when the current bills began to be issued.
