The second phase of Myanmar’s 2025 multi-party general election was held today, January 11, in 100 townships. Polling stations opened at 6:00 a.m. and closed at 4:00 p.m., with voters casting their ballots throughout the day.
The first phase of the election took place on December 28, 2025, in 102 townships. Phase two covered townships across Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Sagaing, Tanintharyi, Bago, Magway, Mandalay, Mon, Yangon, Shan, and Ayeyarwady regions and states. Voter turnout varied, with some areas seeing long queues while others experienced steady voting until closing time.
A voter from Dagon Myothit (North) said voting with an electronic machine was a new and efficient experience. He explained that he voted not for a specific candidate, but in hope that a parliament would emerge to address the real difficulties faced by people on the ground.
On the day of voting, the Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission and Acting President, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, visited polling stations in Latha, Hlaing, and Insein townships in Yangon Region to observe the voting process.
Overall, the 2025 general election is being held in 265 out of 330 townships. After phases one and two, the third phase is scheduled for January 25 in 63 townships, while elections will not be held in 65 townships.
