A Myanmar lawmaker has questioned whether the government plans to reduce the number of checkpoints where money is allegedly collected from vehicles transporting local products.

During a parliamentary session on July 13, MP U Khin Maung Chin, representing Myawaddy Township in Kayin State, raised concerns over the issue.

Responding to the question, Nay Pyi Taw Council member U Win Moe Khaing said no fees are collected from local products and that authorities are conducting regular inspections to prevent illegal collections. He added that anyone found demanding unauthorized payments faces legal action under existing laws and disciplinary measures under relevant civil service regulations.

U Win Moe Khaing also said that the only authorized payment points nationwide are official road toll gates operated by the Ministry of Construction, BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) companies, and the Road Department for road and bridge usage.

He explained that security inspections at these checkpoints are aimed at preventing the movement of terrorists, weapons, drugs and chemical precursors, online scam suspects, illegal migrant workers, human traffickers, and fugitives. Authorities are instructed to carry out inspections efficiently while ensuring local products are not mixed with illegal goods and that transportation is not unnecessarily delayed.
