Mother and daughter arrested over killing and robbery of elderly woman in Botahtaung

A domestic helper and her 17-year-old daughter have been arrested for allegedly killing a 74-year-old woman and stealing her jewelry and electronic devices in Botahtaung Township, Yangon Region, according to sources.

The incident occurred at around 9:45 pm. on September 7 at the victim’s home in Ward 8, Botahtaung Township. Police said domestic helper Daw Tin Nwe, 58, and her daughter, Aye Myat Mon, also known as Thu Thu, 17, allegedly suffocated the elderly woman, Daw Thein Myint, by covering her face with a pillow and blanket while she was in the living room.

The suspects allegedly fled with a pair of diamond earrings, a platinum necklace, a Samsung A20 mobile phone and a Samsung tablet belonging to the victim.

The victim’s husband reported the incident to police, who opened a case under Sections 302 and 394 of the Penal Code and launched an investigation to identify and arrest the suspects.

Police said Daw Tin Nwe and Aye Myat Mon were arrested on the afternoon of September 8 at the “Aung Chan Thar” bus station in Kakayan village, Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Region. They were reportedly found in possession of the stolen Samsung A20 phone, Samsung tablet and K24.5 million in cash.

According to police, the suspects told investigators that they had begun working as domestic helpers at the home of U Khin Maung and his wife, Daw Thein Myint, more than a month earlier.

The two allegedly planned the robbery because they needed money. On September 7, while U Khin Maung was at his snack shop in Ward 3, they allegedly suffocated Daw Thein Myint by covering her face with a pillow and blanket before taking her jewelry, phone and tablet.

Police said both suspects were arrested along with the alleged stolen property and that further legal action is being taken against them.
