It has been learned that the Union Election Commission (UEC) has approved an increase in campaign expenditure limits for candidates contesting in the upcoming general election.

Under the previous election laws, candidates for the Pyithu Hluttaw (lower house), Amyotha Hluttaw (upper house), and Region or State Hluttaws were allowed to spend up to 15 million kyats each for election expenses, while candidates for the Ethnic Affairs Hluttaw were permitted up to 30 million kyats.

However, according to the amendments to the Political Parties Registration Law and Election Laws announced by the UEC on October 26, the campaign spending limits have now been revised — candidates for the Pyithu Hluttaw, Amyotha Hluttaw, and Region or State Hluttaws may spend up to 30 million kyats each, and Ethnic Affairs Hluttaw candidates may spend up to 50 million kyats.
