Local residents have staged a second wave of protests against the Nampannga hydroelectric project in Thawuntaik area of Homalin Township, Sagaing Region.
The protestors from the villages of Thawuntaik gathered in the town of Homalin on October 15 saying that they are staging the protest because it was totally unacceptable to local villagers that the authorities continue planning for the project.
Both the banks of Nampannga creek where the project is located have frequently seen damaged soil, landslides and flash floods in the rainy season. Moreover, the project area is in the earthquake zone. The nearby villages have therefore concerned that such problems will be compounded by displacement when the project comes.
The local people have sent a complaint against the project to the President, Myanmar Human Rights Commission, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy and the Sagaing Region chief minister.
The hydropower project set to generate 4 megawatts of electricity is being implemented with Ks24 billion funded by the regional government.
The four-year project is due to be completed in 2021-22 fiscal year.
