Although the American embassy to Myanmar has announced over US$46 million in the US government aid for civil society organizations and political parties including the Union Election Commission (UEC) to be able to manage the 2020 general election, the UEC has never been paid a single penny, commission member Myint Naing has remarked.

The UEC held a press conference on Nay Pyi Taw on September 2 and a reporter asked the commission how it would manage over the US aid.

“We didn’t receive even a dollar. People say so when news erupts. UEC didn’t get a dollar. So it is clear. Just consider if other things should be trusted or not,” Myint Naing said.

The Facebook page of the US embassy wrote a post on August 28 saying that for the CSOs including the UEC and political parties to manage and get involved in the 2020 election, the US government has provided over US$46 million.
