Ms Christine Schraner Burgener, the special envoy of Secretary-General of the United Nations to Myanmar, met the officials of Arakan National Party (ANP) in the discussions at the headquarters of the ANP in Sittwe in Rakhine State on July 10.

The UN special envoy and the officials of the ANP had a discussion, highlighting the trouble situation facing the displaced persons as a result of recent clashes between the government defence services and the AA insurgents and repatriation process of those fleeing to Bangladesh, said ANP officials.

“The difficulties found in recent armed conflicts are the major problem. The ANP showed an attitude toward repatriation process of those fleeing to Bangladesh,” said Tun Aung Kyaw, member of leading committee for ANP policy.

Those meeting with the UN special envoy were Aye Nu Sein and Tun Aung Kyaw, members of leading committee for ANP policy, Khaing Pyi Soe, General Secretary of the ANP and Aung Than Kyaw, CEC member of the ANP.

In meeting with the UN special envoy, the officials of the ANP spotlighted inadequate assistance provided by the government to displaced persons and submitted the problems of cutting off internet access in 8 townships in Rakhine State, releasing a curfew order and arresting the people unfairly.

“The Union Government is like the parents of the whole country and lacks assistance. We mentioned inadequate supplies,” said Tun Aung Kyaw.

Displaced persons have reached 50,000 in Ponnakyun, Kyawtaw, MraukU, Minbya, Yethetaung, Buthidaung, according to the release of Rakhine Ethnic Congress (REC) on July 9.

The UN special envoy arrived in Myanmar on July 9 and visited Rakhine State Government, the ANP, Rakhine social organizations and IDP camps in Sittwe the following day.

The UN special envoy said the findings including the discussions with the ANP spotted in Rakhine trip will be present to the government in meeting with the latter. She would write a fair report, said Aye Nu Sein.
