The Union Election Commission (UEC) itself may launch lawsuits against protestors and press conference organizers for voter list irregularities if their accusations are wrong, a spokesperson of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has challenged.

Win Soe made the remark during a press conference on the November election held in Shwepyitha Township in January 2021.

Under UEC chairman Tin Aye who took charge of holding the 2015 general election, the accusations against the waxing of ballot papers were immediately rebutted and resolved, he said.

“Just question those like us who are staging protests and holding press conferences across the country. File lawsuits against us in accord with the law. If so, we will respond with our evidence. But they didn’t reply and listen. They do as they wish. Is it democracy?” the USDP spokesperson said.

The USDP is rechecking the voter lists in 45 townships of Yangon Region and 28 have been finished. Of the nine townships in Yangon North District, six have finished rechecking. And there were 145,131 voters on the voter lists that could have led to electoral fraud for five reasons—name, date of birth, NRC No, father’s name and mother’s name—he said.

“We are in the process of rechecking to respond to what they are turning a blind eye by saying ‘no’,” Win Soe said.

He said there were 22,990 voters whose personal details are all the same, 4,090 voters with different mother’s names, 2,456 voters with different father’s names, 3,044 voters whose names are mistaken and 13,116 voters whose dates of birth are wrong.

“Those lists could have led to vote rigging. This is why the vote results are bloated,” he said.
