More than 1,500 people have been relocated to temporary flood relief shelters in Hpa-an, Kayin State, as heavy rainfall and rising water levels in the Thanlwin River continue to threaten low-lying and riverside areas.

The Thanlwin River exceeded the danger level of 750 centimetres and reached 841 centimetres at 12:30 pm. on August 13, according to measurements taken in Hpa-an.

In response, two additional temporary flood relief shelters were opened at Shwe Yin Myaw and the gymnasium of Basic Education High School No. 3 to accommodate residents from flood-prone areas.

A total of four temporary shelters are now operating in Hpa-an, located at the indoor stadium, Laytha Monastery, Shwe Yin Myaw Pagoda and the Basic Education High School No. 3 gymnasium.

As of noon on August 13, the shelters were accommodating 335 households, comprising 753 men and 828 women, for a total of 1,581 people.
