They will inform the public if 2020 general election date is changed due to COVID-19 pandemic, said Myint Naing, a member of Union Election Commission (UEC) on September 2.

“We have no reason to change the election date yet. If the date is changed, we will announce in October. Most COVID-19 cases are occurred in Sittwe and Yangon and only little cases are reported in other places,” he said.

Election campaign period will be arrived and the UEC will announce it about the campaign period soon as the government imposed restrictions of mass gatherings and public events, he said.

“We will announce it in public through Facebook and UEC’s website,” he said.

The UEC is negotiating with Ministry of Health and Sports for voters to give vote during COVID-19.

“We have prepared for the election like elections held in Singapore and South Korea and more polling stations are opened for precautions,” he said.

Although the UEC initially arranged to place over 40,000 polling stations across the country in 2020 general election, about 1,000 more polling stations are planned to add in COVID-19 period.
