Tax evasion is regarded as a serious crime in developed countries, but almost everyone in Myanmar is avoiding paying tax, said Dr Myo Nyunt, spokesperson of National League for Democracy (NLD).

The remarks of the spokesperson of the NLD came from his reply to the questions of the journalists after the CEC meeting of the NLD in Nay Pyi Taw on December 9.

“The citizens in every country around the world have to pay taxes. In this way, a country has to operate its functions. But the previous successive governments had to operate by spending incomes coming from national resources. We will have to gradually change our country into the one that can rely on revenues.

“We can see different types of business around us. It is known to all whether all these businesses pay taxes or not. I don’t mean illegal businesses such as opium trafficking. When we look from tax angle, tax evasion is regarded as a serious crime in developed countries, but almost everyone in Myanmar is avoiding paying tax,” said Dr Myo Myunt.

“We will have to reform everywhere slowly by slowly. The most important thing is public participation. For this we will try to the best of our ability,” said Dr Myo Nyunt.

There are those who are avoiding taxes. Office rules and regulations are irregular. These are illegal ways, said Dr Myo Nyunt.

Asked if the reporter asked the question, Dr Myo Nyunt replied that they were placing emphasis on anti-corruption. Complaints were being handled in an effective manner. Now is a different matter unlike the past.
