Holding the general election successfully amid ongoing health challenges also means a political success in the international community, said State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi during her visit to Coco Island.

It was the first visit she had made to the island and she made the remark in meeting with local authorities.

“Election is a crucial matter of the whole country. It is also politically important. It is crucial for both domestic and international affairs. If the election can be successfully held despite the ongoing health challenges, It will be a great success for our country in the international community. Administrative authorities, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population and the Election Commission must all cooperate in ensuring that all eligible voters cast their votes and that all voter lists are correct. It is the duty of the government to create conditions where all eligible voters can cast their votes. The people’s duty is to vote by grabbing that opportunity. People must be dutiful,” the State Counsellor said.

Located on the furthest border in the northeastern Bay of Bengal, Coco Island serves the country in terms of security, she commented.

She also called on authorities to serve the best interest of the people adding that the region would develop in months, not in years, if all are to cooperate in regional development tasks.

During her visit, the State Counsellor was accompanied by Union Minister Min Thu, Lieutenant General Soe Htut, Thant Sin Maung, Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein, Chief of Myanmar Police Force Police Lieutenant General Aung Win Oo and officials.

Coco Island has a population of only 1,360. It is only accessible by water route.

The Union Solidarity and Development Party won seats for all the three houses of parliament in the Coco Island constituency in the 2015 general election in which the National League for Democracy made a landslide victory.
