State Counsellor is meeting large crowds of local people these days, and she visited Debayin and Shwebo towns in Sagaing Region on March 11.

Her latest visits came after going to Lashio in Shan State and PyinOoLwin in Mandalay Region on March 10.

In a meeting with local populace of Debayin, she said people should not rely on the government solely to do everything because this can shape dictatorship, not democracy.

“I have often said we should not be in a state of mind that the government must do everything. This will not shape democracy but will provoke dictatorship. An authoritarian government does everything. It decides on all things. For a democratic government, all blames go to it.  But the government has no power to do everything. The government has to do things within the framework of law,” the State Counsellor said.

She said there were many benefits of visiting Debayin because the government came to know hopes and concerns of the local people as well as their weaknesses.

“One should not consider one’s own interest. One should also consider others’ interest. We must take others’ requirements into account,” she commented.

Aung San Suu Kyi came to Debayin 17 years after the unrest there.

The unrest occurred in Kyi Village, Debayin Township, Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, on May 30, 2003.

In January this year also, the State Counsellor met local people from several townships of Naga Self-Administered Region.

She also visited Taunggyi on February 11, Panglong on February 12, Tunzan and Htantalan on February 19, Kawkareik and Kyainseikgyi in Kayin State on February 24 and Hlinebwe and Myawady at the end of February.
