The water level of the Thaungyin River has receded, but roofs of some houses in low-lying areas, including Thayet Pin Gate in Ward No.5 of Myawady, were still submerged as of 10 am on July 25.
Although the high-lying areas, such as Friendship Bridge, Bayint Naung Road, the intersection of Kyan Khin Road, and Ward No.5 and Ward No.2, were passable, the low-lying roads, the area around Mogok Monastery in Ward No. 3, and the fence around No.2 Basic Education High School were still submerged.
“The water is reducing fast. In the morning, it was about two feet high on the road. Now it has dropped about 5 or 6 feet. If it doesn’t rain, it could reach the bank by evening,” said a young volunteer who is helping with the rescue.
Houses in Ward No. 2, Sein Naga Hotel Road, Khun Sa Win valley, and Kyauk Pya Gate valley are still submerged, making it difficult for people to return home.
A total of 808 households, with a population of 1,635 males and 1,646 females, are currently sheltering in temporary flood relief camps at Kyar Khattaw Monastery, Tawya Monastery, Ko Na Win Monastery, Dhidhun Aung religious hall, Hayman Oo Monastery, Ye Pu Taung Paw Monastery, Dhammayan Aung Monastery religious hall, and Pha Chauk Kaung Monastery due to the floods in Myawady.
The Myawady District Disaster Management Team, social organizations, and the Karen Border Guard Force (BGF) are working together to provide food and health care to the flood-affected people in the eight relief camps in their respective neighborhoods.
